Introduction: Tarcol Lodge is dedicated to birders and nature lovers. Through knowledgeable guides specializing in the incredible diversity of birds this region holds, guests will see more of the birds and wildlife than while staying at the other lodges in the area. Although Tarcol Lodge is somewhat rustic and does not have all of the creature comforts like air conditioning (fans are provided), private bathrooms, and a swimming pool, guests relish in the personal attention, great birding, and excellent meals provided by the staff and guide. Guests also enjoy its unique location being nestled in the mangroves overlooking the estuary of the Tarcol River.

Location: Tarcol Lodge is located near the mouth of the Tarcol River on its southern bank just beyond the town of Playa Azul. It is approximately 15 minutes from Carara National Park. A map will be provided via email to any guests who are planning on driving themselves.

Accommodations: Tarcol Lodge is a single, two story building made up of 5 rooms for guests, 1 downstairs and 4 upstairs. Hot water is available in the 2 bathrooms located one on each floor, neither of which is private. Overall the lodge is small and rustic yet clean with a pioneer atmosphere. Fans are provided in each room, there is no air conditioning. Screens on the windows allow the ocean breeze in and the insects out. Both the balcony and porch overlook the river mouth where birding is exceptional. Balanced, nutritious meals are served family style in the dining room. The tap water is not potable but bottled drinking water is provided at no extra charge. International phone service is available but can be problematic at times.
